THE WAY IT GOES...

Never before had Ebony ever though she would view a night spent at the home of one of her clients as a vacation of sorts, but tonight that was exactly how it felt. Tonight’s character, Nathaniel, wasn’t a bad sort, which was a relief, but that was hardly the reason. Lately when Ebony was out and about, either doing errands or out for a walk or at one of the local clubs trying to recruit new clients, there was one particular soul that seemed to pop up wherever she went. A one Erik Covington, who she’d met at a club one night during one of her recruiting visits, and who since then she had seen a great deal but not exactly as a regular client. Since happening upon her at school, where he apparently worked as a security guard, where they’d had a (very) rough and tumble in one of the empty seminar rooms without him giving her a cent, they had bumped into each other on multiple occasions. It always seemed to happened on accident, and during one of these times where he was dragging her off back to his place she did ask him about it, wondering whether or not he had nothing better to do than to stalk her after telling her just how interesting he found her. But he’d insisted that all of their meetings up until now had been completely coincidental, and oddly enough, she believed him.

He hardly had any reason to be seeking her out like this. There were plenty of women that frequented those clubs that would give anything to have someone like Erik for the night, even with the fangs that came with a night of passion. He had to know that, and yet more often than not when she wasn’t with one of her clients, she was being escorted by Erik to his bedroom and wasn’t let out until they were both thoroughly satisfied. At this point it was something of a regular routine for them, this odd middle ground of theirs where she was his but wasn’t receiving payment like she was used to, and had been going on for a bit now. If she was being honest, she had begun to get slightly used to Erik always popping back into her life. There were even evenings that were particularly dull where she almost hoped to run into him, and then there he was, appearing as if from nowhere. Tonight however, as Nathaniel sat up in bed and kissed her shoulder, was not one of those nights. It probably wouldn’t beseech her to see him when she smelled like another vampire. Not to mention the obvious punctures on her neck that Nathaniel kissed tenderly as she moved to pull on her skirt. They would be covered shortly with a scarf when she was walking home and she knew how to tend to puncture wounds with a mixture of herbs and her magic before she would let herself go to bed.

Finally dressed, Ebony accepted her payment, wished Nathaniel a good night, even if he was teasing that she should stay for a second round, and headed down the stairs. She glanced in a mirror by the door to check her appearance. Her makeup was fixed, and a red scarf was wrapped loosely around her neck, positioned perfectly to keep the mark hidden as she walked from here to her dorm room. Fixing her skirt once more before opening the door, she moved to shut it behind her before digging in her purse, looking for her iPod. She always enjoyed listening to music on her late night walks. Before she could find it, the front door opened again, and there was Nathaniel in a thrown-on pair of jeans and an undershirt, grinning away at her. ”You going to run off into the night without a proper goodbye?”[/color] he asked her. Ebony pulled her hand out of her purse, and he hooked an arm around his waist to pull her close, bringing his lips to hers again. She didn’t hesitate in kissing him back, her hands resting on his shoulders at first, and Nathaniel didn’t hesitate to deepen the kiss and pull her even tighter, so she was right up against him. Her movements matched his passion, pulling him tighter as well. Even with this being part of a job that she was getting paid to do, Ebony had never seen a reason that she couldn’t take enjoyment out of certain aspects of her work. She sighed against his lips, and after she felt Nathaniel’s hands slip up under her shirt and felt his fingers graze against the small of her back, a particularly sensitive spot, her breath caught in her throat, which seemed to spur Nathaniel on even more, and he leaned against the closed door, bringing Ebony with him.

She allowed herself to enjoy him for a few more moments before pulling away, against his sigh of protest. ”Some of us actually need to sleep tonight Nathaniel.” Another slow, lingering kiss, before she stepped back from him. ”Goodnight.” With that, she finally pulled away and walked down towards the sidewalk, heading off in the direction of the university campus, which was quite a few blocks away, but she didn’t mind the walk. Ebony guessed her lipstick was a bit smudged now, but decided to ignore it as she began walking, one hand reaching into her purse for her iPod again while she kept moving.

YA KNOW I WANT YA

It was hot. So very, very hot.

The weather was absolutely unrelenting, and it was difficult for even a witch, with control of the magical entities of this world, to really keep cool. Ebony had a bottle of ice water in front of her binder at the head of the seminar table, some mint leaves floating in the top, which she had hoped would freshen her a bit, but it wasn’t exactly working. Ebony had her hair up to feel the air from the fan in the corner of the room on her neck, and was wearing a light tank top that bared her midriff, a short yellow skirt, some strappy sandals, and had left her flat without even putting a bra on. And yet she had still managed to apply some lipstick, mascara, and the rose perfume that she always wore when she left her room. Instead of doing all the talking, like the professors that she ardently admired always did when they sat in a lecture hall, Ebony directed the discussion so that it was mainly the students that were talking. The second seminar that she led was full of 3rd year students, who were much more familiar with how the school system worked and they were much more vocal in seminar. Participation may have only counted for 10% of their grade, but they knew well enough by now how all of those little marks, those piddly assignments that professors tossed your way worth 5%, 10%, 15%, really added up when you reached the end of the year.

”What is to be said about natural remedies when we live in a world of advancing medical technologies, anyway?” One of her female students asked. She was a very opinionated one, in the pre-med stream. Like Ebony, she wanted to be in the medical field, only she was hoping to be a nurse, not a doctor. It usually irked Ebony when she opened her mouth, but as usual her face was blank as she listened to her, waiting for her to continue. ”We’re curing cancer, finding cures for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, with modern medicine. I guess I just don’t see the point to be so sure that these natural remedies are still relevant in today’s society.” To Ebony’s surprise, may other students in the room rose to the defence of natural properties, and it relieved her greatly. After all, she planned on one day dedicating her life to getting a medical degree, and using a combination of natural medicines and magic to heal the patients in her practice. After the debate/conversation died down, many pairs of expectant eyes turned towards the only teaching assistant in the room. Ebony removed her red frames (purely for show, but she really did feel they completed the outfit) and blinked before saying, ”What it comes down to is this . . . to understand the future, and the present, we must be aware of our roots, no pun intended.” Her students chuckled, some politely and some genuinely. It was no bother of hers either way.

”We would not have the advancements we have now without the natural remedies that were used in the first place. That’s why pre-med students are required to fulfil a full credit in the herbology department.” Ebony glanced at the female student when she said this – not unkindly, just because she was aware of the student’s major. ”It’s because to have a true understanding of the remedies you’re working with, you should know the compounds, and what makes up those compounds. Not only that, but . . .” Ebony wanted to continue, but she noticed that her students were subtly attempting to pack up their things. It was nearly 10. None of her students were night-dwellers, at least according to their species, and they all looked keen to be done with their academic responsibilities for the day. Shaking her head, Ebony said, ”Anyway, you all seem prepared for the midterm next week. Just brush up on your reading before Tuesday is upon us. I’ve had a look at the exam, and believe me, you’ll thank me for taking my advice.” Now everyone was moving at quicker speeds to pick up their things, the scuffling of chairs and shoes on the linoleum as they picked up their things and left. Ebony moved slower, always the last out of the room in case a student had a question for her. Tonight everyone seemed eager to leave the building, so Ebony was soon alone in the seminar room. She put her binder and her bottled water in her bag, and put her glasses back on. Moving out of the seminar room, she turned off the lights but remained under the frame, not yet ready to shut the door and move on. The janitor would arrive to do a cleanup and lock the room when it got closer to midnight. Ebony stood there in the hallway for a moment, slinging the straps of her purse over her shoulder as she stood there, pausing a moment to glance at her watch.

STOP AND STARE

There wasn’t much to it; sitting patiently and quietly in a waiting room that is, waiting for one’s turn to see the campus doctor. He was a demon, a Dr. Andrick Garretson. Under regular circumstances Ebony would naturally admire the man that she hadn’t met, given that he was a doctor and that was what Ebony strived to be one day, after she achieved her masters in herbology and then her medical degree after that. But for now, she was just waiting outside, waiting for her scheduled appointment. Was there anything wrong with her? Not really, no. In fact, she was the perfect image of health. She had come here for an entirely different reason. While she sat there, her hands at her sides resting on the chair, her eyes were shut and she was mumbling something to herself, reciting the same thing over and over. To a curious onlooker, like the kind-looking receptionist, it might look as if she was a stupid girl going through a pregnancy scare, and was sitting there praying to some non-existent deity that she wouldn’t become a mother anytime soon. When it came to that kind of business, Ebony was always careful. What she was actually doing was chanting a spell, and her eyes were closed to give her full concentration.

Her reasoning for casting this spell can be explained by the events of a few days before her appointment. After finishing up with one of the two seminars she led, as her students packed up and hurried out the door, she took her time getting her things so that if a student chose to linger behind in order to ask a question about the material she would be able to answer. Nobody seemed overly eager to ask her about the research paper that was due in three weeks, which was a little unsettling. But if they didn’t come to her when they needed help and ended up doing poorly, then they had nobody to blame but themselves. But they were all first-years; eventually they would learn. Ebony was just picking up her binder, decorated with a few randomly scattered Sherlock stickers, when she noticed the face of the last of her students in the room, who was moving at a snail’s pace to collect her things. Her face looked pale, so much so that she looked unhealthy, and there was a puffiness to her eyes that showed she may have been crying. Ebony was far from a grief counselor, but it couldn’t hurt to extend a hand, see if the girl was maybe stressed about the course material. ”Penelope . . . is there something wrong?” At her question the girl flinched, and just as quickly, tears streamed down her face, like she’d been holding them in throughout the entire seminar.

Clearly something was wrong. Ebony herself never truly exhibited emotions of her own, but it didn’t stop her from wanting to soothe the unpleasantness of whatever was gripping this poor undergraduate student. Her hands gripped the back of one of the plastic seminar chairs tightly She was practically shaking. Scooping the remainder of her belongings into her school bag, Ebony moved closer to the girl, not touching her but just keeping close. ”If there’s something going on that’s making you upset . . . Especially if it’s related to school, you can tell me. I might be able to help.” At that, the girl’s head flew up, her eyes wild and pleading as she faced her teaching assistant, ”No, don’t do that, please! If I tell anyone, if I say anything . . . he’ll hurt me.” This was when something very familiar flared up inside Ebony. This had all the symptoms of abuse, and as unfortunate a part of her life as it was, this was an area where she happened to have plenty of experience. Not sure what else to do, Ebony walked with her out of the seminar room, buying them each a coffee on the way, and escorting the girl to her dorm, where she eventually broke down when they were talking in private and told her everything. It had been the campus doctor. Nothing sexual had happened, but he had still hurt her, something that he’d seemed to take a lot of pleasure in at that time. Hearing that not only a staff member was capable of doing this to a first year student, but a doctor nonetheless, sickened Ebony to her very core. She knew that as a future doctor herself, she couldn’t stand for this, and it was time to take action.

A day later, she had been able to get an appointment with the demon doctor himself. The spell she was chanting in his waiting room was one that gave her a “travelling gaze.” What this meant was that her line of sight could shift to an area not too far off from her body. Almost like her sight was being lifted from her body, it traveled the ten feet from where she sat to the door to the doctor’s office, and then moved right through the door, without the slightest trace. Now she could look in on how Dr. Garretson truly treated his patients, only to confirm what she already knew to be true before it was her turn to see the doctor.

STOP AND STARE

Many girls going out clubbing for the night felt it necessary to wear bold colours, like red and yellow, to get the attention of potential suitors, or even black to make them look seductive and mysterious. Ebony felt no real desire to make herself “stand out.” She had a business to maintain, and her work was better kept in the shadows. Of course, that didn’t mean that she couldn’t look nice while she was out, trying to meet potential clients. Her dress was a nice turquoise colour with black lace detailing, and she wore laced tights to match. She was put together, and her makeup was perfectly done, her eyes lined to give her green eyes more of a piercing, memorable gaze, even if the stare she wore as she glanced around the nightclub was blank. Another item she was wearing on her was a pin, a dark red rose that was dripping with blood. It was a symbol of hers, it signified who she was and what business she fronted. The bleeding rose was the symbol on all of her business cards. She went by “The Bleeding Heart” on her website, and it was the name printed on her card. Normally when actually meeting clients she gave them a fake name, never her real one, so that nothing could be traced back to her. The details of her business that could be found by the public only talked about her selling of her blood, the powerful blood of a witch, and nothing else. But her regular clients knew that it was only the proper price that was needed for her to deliver other sorts of services. When payment was offered, no further questions were asked, aside from questions regarding the personal preferences of her clients.

Ebony had a regular string of clients. Making them happy, in a variety of different ways, helped her to pay for school. She was a graduate student in the herbology department. She was working on getting her masters. After that, she hoped to move onto medical school to receive her MD, and become a doctor that specialized in a combination of natural medicines and magic to heal patients. But in order to get there, she had a lot of money to raise. Luckily this business was a very lucrative one. Although recently she’d been in something of an accident, which had amounted to a few medical bills. Sure, the man who’d rescued her, as it turned out, had footed the bill, but she wouldn’t allow for that to happen. She would repay him for the bills and for his leather jacket that she’d coughed up blood onto, once she could afford it. A few clients would hopefully be able to help her do that. Ebony did her usual business of circling the room, chatting casually with anybody that approached her. Over the years, she had developed something of a sixth sense, being about to tell apart the vampires from the other supernatural species. Some men develop a radar for blonde, some straight women develop a radar for gay men, and Ebony’s talents were in finding fangs. Whenever somebody approached her that she knew fancied blood more than whatever it was they were drinking, she would do her best at flirting before slipping her one of her cards, saying that she was just a phone call away. After that, she would take her leave and continue making her rounds.

After she had handed out at least a half-dozen cards to potential clients, she decided to camp out at the bar for a while and rest her feet. It took a great deal of willpower to walk around for that long in the heels she had on, but she certainly looked good doing it. A little rest was called for. Pulling herself up on one of the comfortable stools that the lounge area had to offer, she glanced up at the bartender, politely ordering a drink, her first of the night. Some of the people that approached her offered to buy her a drink, and for each offer she politely declined, saying that she had an early morning ahead of her, which also allowed her to get away without anyone requesting her services tonight, after having just met her. She was doing her best to keep tonight free, but to occupy the rest of her week with appointments. Now she ordered an Appletini, something sweet with a pleasant taste, but before that happened she reached into her small purse, rummaging inside of it for a moment.

There was a small pouch inside of her purse, and she pulled what looked like a small purple berry out of it, one that gave off a very strange and magical glow. She popped it into her mouth, chewing for a moment before swallowing it and the juices. It was a special little treat that she used on nights where she felt like having a drink or two. The healing properties of the mulberry, along with a spell she had learned in one of the books her guardian had given her, allowed alcohol to dissolve into nothing but water when it reached her stomach. That way she could enjoy the delicious taste of her Appletini, the keen sting of too many drinks along her throat if it came to that, and she would still be sharp. This prevented most drugs from being slipped into her drink and getting in her system as well, so it was a nifty little trick. When her martini arrived, she took a nice, long sip, enjoying its sweetness.

Ebony ended her “meeting” with her client with a passionate kiss, during which the female vampire was holding her tight. She even reached under her skirts, clearly wanting more, but Ebony had already been paid and was no longer on the clock. Moving away, Ebony said to her, ”Until next time,” with her voice as flat as ever, and Ebony exited the brown stone, wrapping her peach and salmon scarf around her neck to hide the bite mark on the right side of her neck. As Ebony walked away from the townhouse and further into the downtown district, she popped in her ear buds, her iPod already synched to only play music by her favorite band, Halestorm. The song was a slower pace, unlike the majority of their music, and it was calming as she walked. Before leaving her client’s home she had touched up her red lipstick, which had been smudged a bit beforehand. Ebony happened to glance at her reflection in a nearby store window which was papered up, clearly having gone out of business some time ago. Her hair had been put up before she’d left as well, and her eyeliner hadn’t gotten smudged, which she was grateful for. While Ebony didn’t seek the attraction of passers-by like other people might, she took pride in her appearance, and she enjoyed buying clothes and looking nice whenever she left her dorm to head to a seminar she had to leave or when she was headed off to meet a client.

Ebony continued to walk, her heeled boots causing her feet to ache slightly, but she trekked on. She didn’t own a car, since she had enough expenses to deal with, and heavily relied on walking and public transportation. In spite of being a witch, and the humanized stereotypes that came along with that, flight via broomstick wasn’t her thing, nor was pointed hats of any kind. As Ebony walked, she soon found herself surrounded by various bars and nightclubs, all surging with nightlife activity. This was the time where a lot of people were just starting their evening, heading into their entertainment venue of choice. Unless she had a client request her to meet them in one of these locations, Ebony wasn’t the type to frequent these sorts of places, and preferred returning to her dorm at a semi-reasonable hour in order to get as much beauty rest as possible. Ebony was acquainted with quite a few people that had fun in these sorts of places, but when invited for a night out on the town Ebony often said no in response, and that was that. Truth be told, it was a rare thing for people to approach her in the first place. The fact that emotions rarely registered in her face, or her voice, put most people off. That didn’t mean that she was completely void of emotion, because she did feel things. She was just the only person who knew.

Ebony soon approached a bus shelter, and decided that she would catch the community bus here instead of opting to walk all the way back to campus. Her boots were painful, but they were also adorable and she didn’t want to take them off for the rest of her journey. As she stood there after pulling out her school ID that doubled as a bus pass, she absently picked some lint off of her fishnets, waiting for the bus that would eventually bring her back to her bed so she could get some sleep.
